Regulation Of Debt Management Companies In South Africa
Debt management companies in South Africa must be registered with the National Credit Regulator and may not be affiliated with any debt collection company. As such consumers are protected and can with confidence approach one of the debt management companies registered to assist with the negotiation of lower payment terms, one consolidated debt repayment plan, budgeting, and protection against creditor harassment. X-Debt as one of the registered debt review companies understand how debt is accumulated and deals with such situations on a daily basis. Applicants are thus assured of confidentiality and ethical conduct by the debt management companies such as X-Debt which is a registered debt review company with an extensive team of debt counsellors.

Debt Help In South Africa Is Regulated By The NCR
The NCR, known in full as the National Credit Regulator oversees the registration and conduct of companies offering debt help in South Africa. As such the consumer is protected against unethical behaviour and high prices from companies offering debt help. Debt review companies are established with the specific purpose of helping over indebt individuals negotiate better payment terms with creditors and ensuring that the amounts which they have to pay back monthly are affordable. In essence the debt help takes the form of debt consolidation. There is no loan involved and no security other than proof of income will be needed. The consumer is then protected against further legal action from creditors while also having the benefit of lower interest rates in certain cases, and one consolidated monthly payment instead of several payments to various creditors.

Debt Review Is Not Blacklisting
It is important not to confuse debt review with blacklisting. Debt review flags on the credit records of a consumer are not seen as the consumer being blacklisted. If a person is flagged for debt counselling it simply means that for the period under the debt review that the person may not make new debt. Once the debt is cleared a clearance certificate is issued. The consumer can then resume normal credit spending. Blacklisting on the other hand is an old term used to indicate that a person may not receive credit due to poor payment of previous and current debts. The term that you will find on a credit report today is “adverse credit”. One can check for such status by requesting an ITC check. If you are blacklisted, thus have an adverse credit record on your name, you will not be able to get credit, but applying for debt review will help you clear the debts and your name in the long run.

Debts Covered By Debt Review
One of the frequently asked questions about debt review pertains to debts covered by debt counselling. Naturally one will want to include as many as possible debts, but it should be noted that vehicles with residuals are seen as leases. As such no leases or service contracts can be included. Water & electricity bills, school fees, cellphone or DSTV contracts, and rent cannot be included as debt. Debt that is covered includes vehicle finance, home loans, store accounts, personal loans, and credit card debt. If two persons are married out of community of property only the debt on the debt review applicant’s name can be covered. Business debts cannot be included unless the person is a sole proprietor.
