The University of Pretoria offers an Introduction to Bookkeeping Short Course, which will give the student a basic understanding of bookkeeping and bookkeeping principles and terminology. It is divided in three modules, and after completion, students will be able to understand:
- the nature & function of bookkeeping
- the effect of transactions on the accounting equation
- basic VAT & it’s application in practical situations
- the process of accounting data in subsidiary journals & ledgers
- preperation of trial balance
- how to reconcile the debtors control account with the debtors ledger
- how to reconcile the creditors control account with the creditors ledger
- how to complete a bank reconciliation statement & reconcile the bank account with the balance on the final bank statement
- the difference between the perpetual inventory system and the periodic inventory system
- the calculation of the closing inventory when the FIFO, weighted average or retail method is used.
